Chris Pratt lends his voice to a fantastic film that is a little cynically based on a well-known IP. Unfortunately, it’s titled “The LEGO Movie,” which took the basic building blocks of the popular plastic toy and, in the hands of Phil Lord and Chris Miller (along with a number of other talented individuals), transformed them into a wild and dazzling blend of pop culture references, clever humor, and genuine emotion.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” attempts to channel some of that intensity, but because it is more concerned with entertaining young children, it never attains the same level. That is not to say that it lacks entertainment value.
What is the plot of the Super Mario Bros. video game?
Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are transported down a mysterious conduit while repairing a water main and find themselves in a magical new world under attack from the powerful Bowser. (Jack Black). However, when the brothers are separated, Mario sets out on an epic journey to locate Luigi. Mario discovers his inner strength with the help of Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), the strong-willed leader of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Nintendo was a firm foundation.
Given Nintendo’s vast library of titles, worlds, characters, and situations, there was undoubtedly sufficient material to create something entertaining. Instead, the gaming background is the source of various easter eggs from various games.
And there are a couple of references that only true Nintendo fans will recognize (full disclosure: this author has played a few of the games, but did not notice everything). A few sequences, such as an early chase performed from the side and Mario’s training, will give players a pleasant shiver of recognition, but they are few.
Style over narrative
The script and narrative of the film present the most significant flaws. While there are some beautifully designed and animated shots, with plenty of detail and faithful recreations of certain elements, you do question why the same attention to detail that went into making Mario’s overalls look right wasn’t applied to the comedy.
The majority of the jokes in this text are ineffective, and those that succeed are more likely to elicit laughter than anything else. Black deserves credit for making Bowser a genuinely amusing character (we won’t reveal his agenda beyond the usual dominance, but if you know what he typically does in the games, you can probably guess). There are significant traces of the actor’s Tenacious D persona (especially when Bowser goes musical), but he blends it in such a way that it does not feel like a carbon copy.
It is busy and loud at times and will appeal more to younger viewers than the sort of four-quadrant charmer that Nintendo and movie producers Illumination might prefer, but targeting the younger audience has worked well for the latter in the past, as evidenced by the box office success of the “Minions” in particular.
It’s a shame that their formula vacuum took such an iconic source material and churned out a broad film with a typical hero plot, a lot of talk about saving kingdoms, and, more confusingly given the target audience, a slew of needle drops that will fly right over their heads (“Holding Out for a Hero” or “Take on Me,” for example).
